The Tower of Babel, found in the Book of Genesis, is a Biblical account of the proposal to build the tallest tower on earth and one that also explains the origin of the different languages we have today. According to the story, a united humanity of the earth’s people following the Great Flood of Noah, speaking one single language and migrating from the east, came to the land of Shinar.
They proposed building a city and tower with its top in the sky, to make a name for themselves, so that they not be scattered over the world. On seeing this, God was against this! He confounded their speech so that they could no longer understand each other and scattered them over the face of the earth, and they stopped building the city. Thus the city was called Babel. Its story recorded in Genesis 11:1-9.
